Abstract |
The Samaria Ostraca reveal systemized interaction between the royalresidence in Samaria and the surrounding clan elites as well as aroyal attempt to align, influence and control tribal elites in Israelduring the first half of the 8th century BCE. Joash and/or Jeroboam IItried to extend and stabilize prestige and authority in the Manassitetribal area around the royal residence. The king invited elite membersof the Manassite clans to reside at the royal court as 'honouredguests', thus assuring himself of their loyalty. This suggests atraditional type of rule that belongs to the first stage of thedevelopment of state administration. |
